SUMMARY:The Contemporary Short Story Competition Ready Course with Carla Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:13th\, 20th\, 27th March (no sessions 3rd and 10th April )    17th\, 24th April      1st\,  8th\, 15th May \nFridays 14.00-15.30 \nEntering writing competitions is great fun and brilliant for building up your writer’s CV if you get placed. Join this eight-week course where\, at the end of it\, you’ll have a 2000 word short story that you can be proud of\, and is competition ready. \nWe’ll be closely analysing stories by Zadie Smith\, Kevin Barry\, Yiyun Li and Clare Keegan (among other twenty-first-century greats) and also exploring how using real-life material can enrich our writing. \nThe course will include two workshopping sessions where you’ll be given feedback from Carla Jenkins and the rest of the attendees\, and you will also give feedback on their short stories. Guidance and support will be given on how to do this. \nYou’ll be expected to do a lot of reading and writing in between sessions\, and a full course outline and reading list will be sent once you’ve signed up. Places are limited to eight so everyone (and their stories) are given a lot of attention. \nFree entry into the Raw Writing Short Story Writing Competition (worth £15). The deadline will be in June\, the word count will be 2000\, and the prize will be a mentoring package (six sessions) with a published writer\, a place on a six-month Raw Writing course\, and publication in the Raw Writing Anthology.

SUMMARY:Raw Writing Workshop Course
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to be in a small and supportive group where you can receive feedback on your written work and learn how to give feedback to others? \nIn the Raw Writers Workshop Course\, you can do just that.\nEach week\, two people will have up to 2500 words of their work in progress critiqued by the others on the course. So with eight participants\, you will have your writing critiqued twice over the course.\nThe group will spend 45 minutes discussing each of the two submissions and then hand over their written comments to the writer. \nWe have created easy-to-use templates focused around the fundamentals of storytelling (characterisation\, dialogue\, setting\, etc.). If you already feel comfortable sharing written feedback\, you are welcome to do so in a way that suits you\, supported by an instructor at every step of the process. \nOften\, we allow our writing to become a sacrifice to life’s seemingly never-ending priorities. Attending a Raw Writers Workshop course helps to hold us accountable. \nNo matter the length of what you’re writing\, readers bring with them expectations about what constitutes a ‘good’ story. Whether you’re writing fiction\, memoir\, (or a blend of the two!) readers expect a clear narrative arc\, with a rise and fall of action and tension\, focused on an engaging protagonist who drives the plot forward. \nWhichever you have chosen\, the writer’s workshop programme is designed to help you write the story you want to tell as efficiently and effectively as possible. \nAdam Shackleton is a writer with a keen interest in developing creative talent. He holds a BA Honours in English Literature and an MA with Distinction\, both from the University of Exeter. Adam was awarded a Dean’s Commendation for the quality of his written work; earning a distinction in every module of his Masters course. \nHe read his Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Cambridge\, and went on to teach for a decade in the United Kingdom and internationally\, specialising in reading and writing. \nAdam has completed numerous creative writing courses with Curtis Brown and Raw Writing. He has also been published in his role as a commentator on politics and social affairs. \nAdam is currently working on a commission for a charity to write a middle-grade novel and a picture book for younger readers. He looks forward to publishing both in 2026 to coincide with the charity’s anniversary celebrations. \nTuesdays \n16th\, 23rd\, 30th Sept \n7th\, 14th\, 21st Oct \n4th\, 11th Nov \n14.00-15.30 \nExeter Library
