SUMMARY:Writing Crime Fiction
DESCRIPTION:With its criminals\, cops\, and everything in between\, crime fiction is this country’s best-selling genre. But what makes it so popular? And why? \nWhat sets it apart from any other genre? And more importantly\, how can you write it? \nThis will be a course that covers character\, dialogue\, landscape and dramatic narrative. It will also involve group workshops with the writers presenting their works in progress for analysis and critique. It will also work as a writing support group\, encouraging the writers to talk to each other and celebrate/commiserate on how their work is going. Celebrate\, obviously.\nI will be there to guide and structure the writers’ work\, giving critiques and holding workshops\, utilising writing tools and exercises to keep the work coming along and the writers unblocked. We will also look at editing and reediting to make sure the finished work is in the best possible form by the end of the course.\nThe end result should be at least a sizeable chunk of a novel\, if not a completed one\, ready to take further. \n\nMartyn Waites was an actor before becoming a writer. He has been nominated for every major British crime fiction award and has written over twenty novels including the critically acclaimed Joe Donovan series\, Born Under Punches which won the Grand Prix du Roman Etranger and The White Room which was a Guardian best book of the year. His next novel\, The Other People\, will be coming out in April\, under the new name CB Everett. \n\nFRIDAYS 14.00-15.30 \nSeptember: 19th\, 26th\nOctober: 3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, 24th\nNovember: 7th\, 14th\, 21st\, 28th\nDecember: 5th\, 12th\, 19th\nJanuary: 16th\, 23rd\, 30th\nFebruary: 6th\, 13th \n\n£900 or can pay in three instalments via Klarna at checkout

SUMMARY:Writing Sci-fi\, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:With Nick Hunt\, author of Red Smoking Mirror\, Outlandish and Where the Wild Winds Are  \nThis course is an introduction to writing imaginative and speculative fiction – from sci-fi and fantasy to alternate history. You will learn techniques for world-building and peopling different realities; imagining utopias\, dystopias and possible futures; how to write strong characters and structure your storyline; and how to make the worlds you create vivid and alive. \nFollowing in the footsteps of writers like Ursula K. Le Guin and Margaret Atwood\, we will examine how speculative writing plays a deeply subversive role\, destabilising ‘the way things are’ and allowing our imagination to break free of its bindings. Imagining different pasts\, and futures\, enables different presents. \nThe course will combine teaching and reading – with inspirations ranging from China Miéville\, Adrian Tchaikovsky and Octavia E. Butler to Alan Garner and William Golding – with writing exercises\, group discussions\, feedback and structured writing time. By the end of the six weeks\, you will have completed a solid beginning to a new story\, or deepened and expanded a work already in progress. Whether you are a published author or a curious beginner\, all you need is something to write on and your imagination. \nNick Hunt is the author of Red Smoking Mirror (Swift Press\, 2021)\, an alternate history set in 16th-century Mexico\, which was a finalist for the Edward Stanford Viking Award for Fiction with a Sense of Place. His non-fiction books include Outlandish\, Where the Wild Winds Are and Walking the Woods and the Water. \nHe has taught writing courses at the Arvon Foundation\, the University of Bristol\, Schumacher College and other institutions. He also works as an editor and a writing mentor. In September 2025 he will start a two-year placement as a Royal Literary Fellow at the University of Bristol. \nThursdays \n18th\, 25th Sept\, \n2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd Oct \n19.00-20.30 \nZoom

SUMMARY:Myths and Legends
DESCRIPTION:Myths and legends are the stories that every other story is made of. At the core of each of the great and enduring stories of the past is a vibrant\, timeless and human story. They are our oldest stories\, dealing with our deepest concerns. But how can we make use of these ancient stories in our own fiction? \nThis course will show students how the epic struggles of heroes like Odysseus\, the complicated plights of monsters like Grendel\, and the ingenious scheming of tricksters like Loki have an important place in\, and can deepen and enrich\, the stories we tell today. It will help us look past the didactic intent and the rigid-seeming and ‘foreign’ structures of the original tales\, with a view to inspiring participants to create full-blooded\, timeless modern fiction of their own.   \nThis six-week course will be a mix of reading and writing\, of in-class workshops and open discussions. We’ll look at the old stories themselves in their original form – from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey to Ireland’s The Táin and The Mabinogion of Wales – and at modern fiction that echoes\, reinterprets or subverts the old tales\, including work by Steven Sherrill\, Desmond Barry\, Ali Smith\, Niall Griffiths\, and others. No previous expertise in mythology of any kind is necessary to get involved – the utility of mythic storytelling is itself universal\, and all are welcome. But equally\, any participants with a special interest or expertise are encouraged to introduce others to the myths of their own culture\, or to those they simply hold dear. \nMost importantly\, we will tell stories of our own. To help us along the way\, we’ll look at\, for example\, how the infamous creature described as ‘part man\, part bull’ by the Roman poet Ovid\, who killed and ate the young men and women of Crete\, is treated in Steven Sherrill’s 2004 novel\, The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break. In Sherril’s story\, the minotaur (still alive and now known simply as ‘M’) is ‘working as a line chef at Grub’s Rib in North Carolina\, keeping to himself\, keeping his horns down\, trying in vain to put his past behind him’. It’s a fascinating tale. But in your own story\, you might reimagine the gorgons of ancient Greece as three sisters in working-class Liverpool\, jealous of their celebrity sister Medusa\, or recast the Morrígan – Irish goddess of war and fate – as a scammer making manipulative predictions on TikTok. Or anything else that strikes your fancy. Sometimes\, it will be as subtle as finding a useful echo between some put-upon character in your story (a young man just out of jail working overtime at Burger King) and Atlas\, the giant who held up the earth itself… \nThis course is suitable for writers of any experience level\, from beginners to veterans. All that’s required is an interest in the stories that lie beneath\, the stories that make our own stories possible. \nBy the end of this six-week course\, you’ll have a better understanding of the old tales\, and will have completed your own short story – your own muscular\, vivid and compelling modern myth. \nTrevor’s debut novel\, Ghosts & Lightning\, was published to international critical acclaim\, and was selected as a Book of the Year in the Guardian and the Irish Times. His short fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies\, journals and magazines\, including Silver Threads of Hope and the Dublin Review (‘Mad For the Rain’\, which was also shortlisted for the William Trevor/Elizabeth Bowen International Short Story Prize).
\n\nWEDNESDAYS 14.00-15.30 \nSeptember: 17th\, 24th\nOctober: 1st\, 8th\, 15th\, 22nd\nNovember: 5\, 12\, 19\, 26\nDecember: 3\, 10\, 17\nJanuary:14\, 21\, 28\nFebruary: 3\, 10 \n\n£900 or can pay in three instalments via Klarna at checkout

SUMMARY:Raw Writing Workshop Course
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to be in a small and supportive group where you can receive feedback on your written work and learn how to give feedback to others? \nIn the Raw Writers Workshop Course\, you can do just that.\nEach week\, two people will have up to 2500 words of their work in progress critiqued by the others on the course. So with eight participants\, you will have your writing critiqued twice over the course.\nThe group will spend 45 minutes discussing each of the two submissions and then hand over their written comments to the writer. \nWe have created easy-to-use templates focused around the fundamentals of storytelling (characterisation\, dialogue\, setting\, etc.). If you already feel comfortable sharing written feedback\, you are welcome to do so in a way that suits you\, supported by an instructor at every step of the process. \nOften\, we allow our writing to become a sacrifice to life’s seemingly never-ending priorities. Attending a Raw Writers Workshop course helps to hold us accountable. \nNo matter the length of what you’re writing\, readers bring with them expectations about what constitutes a ‘good’ story. Whether you’re writing fiction\, memoir\, (or a blend of the two!) readers expect a clear narrative arc\, with a rise and fall of action and tension\, focused on an engaging protagonist who drives the plot forward. \nWhichever you have chosen\, the writer’s workshop programme is designed to help you write the story you want to tell as efficiently and effectively as possible. \nAdam Shackleton is a writer with a keen interest in developing creative talent. He holds a BA Honours in English Literature and an MA with Distinction\, both from the University of Exeter. Adam was awarded a Dean’s Commendation for the quality of his written work; earning a distinction in every module of his Masters course. \nHe read his Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Cambridge\, and went on to teach for a decade in the United Kingdom and internationally\, specialising in reading and writing. \nAdam has completed numerous creative writing courses with Curtis Brown and Raw Writing. He has also been published in his role as a commentator on politics and social affairs. \nAdam is currently working on a commission for a charity to write a middle-grade novel and a picture book for younger readers. He looks forward to publishing both in 2026 to coincide with the charity’s anniversary celebrations. \nTuesdays \n16th\, 23rd\, 30th Sept \n7th\, 14th\, 21st Oct \n4th\, 11th Nov \n14.00-15.30 \nExeter Library

SUMMARY:Poetry Taster Session - Free!
DESCRIPTION:14.00-15.30   Thursday 28th August \nRiddle me this…\nIn this workshop we’ll go back to the earliest poetry in English\, and look at some of the riddles from the Exeter Book\, a collection of Old English poems in the archives of Exeter Cathedral. Everything will be translated\, but you’ll have a chance to read and hear what English was like over a thousand years ago. \nWe’ll look at some expressions called kennings\, enjoy and puzzle over medieval riddles\, then write some of our own. Riddles are a great way of learning to look at things differently\, from unusual angles\, and they help us to develop our ability to think in metaphors. And they’re fun! \nThis is a free session for anyone who is considering the Raw Writing Poetry course starting in September. \nhttps://www.rawwriting.co.uk/event/poetry-reading-it-and-writing-it/ \nPlaces are limited so RSVP below if you would like to come!
