SUMMARY:Shakespeare Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ah\, William Shakespeare\, the bard of Avon\, great Renaissance playwright\, read and revered across the world. But let’s admit he can be quite challenging\, too – all that sixteenth and seventeenth-century English\, all those kings and dukes and princes – not to mention witches\, ghosts and fairies. So what’s the best way to get into all that gorgeous poetry and strange stories\, flying past us on stage or screen? \nIntroduction to Shakespeare is a ninety-minute workshop course designed to help you approach Shakespeare with confidence. Maybe you’re planning on watching a streamed production\, maybe you’ve seen Hamnet and would like to know how much of that was real. Whatever your reason for joining\, there will be something for you. We’ll look at the great poet’s life and times\, explore how a Renaissance theatre worked (what’s all that about boys playing women?)\, how characters are created\, what kinds of things we should look out for in the different kinds of play – tragedies\, comedies and histories\, and how the plays have survived to our own time.  But above all we will look through bite-sized examples at the verse itself\, and bring it alive through speaking it\, feeling it\, living it. All participants will be invited to take part in reading and discussion. As we’ll see\, beneath the often elaboratelanguage there are often quite simple ideas going on. We’ll learn to X-ray in on those and hopefully you’ll leave convinced that\, yes\, Shakespeare really is that great\, and entertaining too! When you sign up\, you’ll receive a selection of extracts to read ahead\, and after the workshop\, you’ll be sent a copy of the points we covered and suggestions for further reading\, viewing and listening. No previous experience necessary\, costumes optional!

SUMMARY:Raw Reading Club (Exeter Phoenix) - Penelope Fitzgerald\, The Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Penelope Fitzgerald\, The Bookshop.  Florence Green decides to open a bookshop in a small town. What could be more charming? But not everyone wants a bookshop or approves of the books she wants to sell. A timeless gem describing what happens when someone shakes up a community set in its ways. A comic and moving novel which reaches deep into human behaviour with Fitzgerald’s brilliantly economic style. \nRaw Reading is a new study group. Each month\, we will read a short classic work of about 100 pages. You’ll be given suggestions for what to look out for\, and questions to prompt your own responses in good time for the monthly meetings. These will be seminars in which we share our thoughts and consider key aspects of literature: themes\, style\, narrative techniques\, interpretation and more. There will be suggestions on further reading to follow up on the set texts. \nThrough the course\, you will exercise your powers of close reading and meet some seriously brilliant writing from different times and cultures. The classics are for everyone. Join us to take your enjoyment of literature to new levels! \nExeter Phoenix   14.00 -16.00  £50

Each week\, there’ll be a range of stimulating prompts and optional writing activities for you to complete in between sessions. \nCourse tutor: Carla’s debut novel\, Fifty Minutes\, was published by Hachette in May 2024\, and her second novel\, Touched\,  is due for publication in April 2027. In 2019\, Carla did a Master’s in Creative Writing at Exeter University and loved it. She missed it so much when it was over that she decided to set up Raw Writing\, to recreate all those wonderful aspects of the MA and give to others what was one of the best experiences she’d ever had. Raw Writing enables people to learn about writing\, improve their writing\, and be part of a writing community.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Exeter Phoenix   £285 (Payable in three instalments of £95. Please email carla@rawwriting.co.uk to arrange.) \nWednesday 6th\, 13th\, 20th May    3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, 24th June\,  1st July \nIntroduction to Shakespeare has one simple aim: to help you experience Shakespeare with confidence\, understanding and above all enjoyment. Our most famous writer is available in so many forms – on stage or screen\, the radio or the page – but where to start? We will discover Shakespeare through performance\, by diving into scenes and speeches (and poems) and reading them aloud. We’ll look at technical terms – soliloquy\, tragedy\, blank verse\, sonnet – but we’ll also ask bigger questions: how is this relevant today? How can Shakespeare help me with my life? Ideal for beginners\, and \nfor those who have some experience but would like to refresh and extend their knowledge of the bard of Avon! \nCourse tutor: Malcolm Hebron studied English at Oxford University\, where he took a doctorate in medieval studies. For thirty years he taught English literature at Winchester College\, which involved teaching Shakespeare every year up to A Level. His publications include Key Concepts in Renaissance Literature\, which covers the history and world of Shakespeare’s time.
