Poetry: Reading it and Writing it! With Malcolm Hebron

Do you feel like savouring a sonnet, writing a riddle, crafting a couplet? Then this course is for you. Poetry: Reading it and Writing it! is a deep dive over six months into the sea of poetry, designed to help you develop your skills as a reader and writer. It is suitable for anyone with an interest in making poetry an important part of their lives, from beginners to those with more experience.

Each week on this course we will discuss some great writing and compose our own creative work. We’ll look at forms, such as haikus, ballads and sonnets; we’ll explore techniques like rhyme and rhythm; and meet poems from different periods and cultures. The course will help you to read with confidence, understanding and above all enjoyment, and develop your own work through a range of exercises.

A bit about me. After studying English at Oxford, I taught for many years at Winchester College, preparing students for A Level. Over that time, I published books on medieval and renaissance writing, literature and linguistics and write a guide on how to read poetry. I’m a Fellow of the English Association, and as an editor of a journal I’ve worked with critics and poets, helping them prepare work for publication. I write poems myself, of course, as a daily habit; and above all I love sharing what I have learned and learning from others.
