Sarah Cook2024-12-13 The Psychology of Writing course with Carla gave me the tools, motivation and (a bit!) more understanding of the writing process. I am now well into the process of getting material for my travel memoir onto paper, and enjoying turning my cycling adventures into a writing adventure. Carly Morris2024-12-11 I am really enjoying my Raw Writing course, I have learnt a huge amount in a short space of time. Carla is a fantastic teacher, gently coaxing out my hidden writer within. A supportive environment and constant encouragement is enabling me to explore my creativity and finally get my ideas down on the page. I will be sad when it’s finished…Sign me up for How to Write a Novel Part 2 please! Gillian S2024-12-11 I bought the ‘Writing Your Novel’ course for my son and I can only speak positively about his experience with Carla. He has developed as a writer and his confidence has improved tremendously. Thank you, Raw Writing, for all your hard work; the passion for nurturing talent which we have witnessed runs through everything Carla does and we are extremely grateful 😊 Vajrin Malin2024-12-11 I’m writing a complex memoir describing a catastrophic fall and irreversible paralysis. Carla, in Raw Writing, has been an expert mentor and writing coach, not only supporting the technical elements of writing but also they’re necessary personal support towards professional writing. I cannot recommend her and her team enough! Rosalind Townsend2024-12-11 Raw Writing has introduced me to like minded people who just want to give writing a go! The on-line sessions with published authors are always informative and help build your writing confidence. The Psychology of Writing Course, was a perfect introduction. Each session was enjoyable and thought provoking, and Carla was always encouraging and positive. Alex2024-12-11 I am currently on a novel writing course with Carla of RAW Writing, and I am thrilled with how things are going. Carla is a fantastic teacher, with explanations that I can understand and information that is incredibly valuable, I have learnt so much. This course has opened up many new possibilities and thoughts for my writing, and Carla herself is truly on the ball. It’s fascinating and inspiring, and I cannot appreciate enough the impact the course, Carla and RAW Writing has made on my creative endeavours. Thank you Carla! Caroline Muldoon2024-12-05 I’ve always fancied the idea of being a writer, ever since I was a kid. But I’d hear “real” writers say they felt an unstoppable compulsion to write, like nothing could hold them back. I never felt that. Instead, I worried I just wouldn’t be good enough. Then, I came across RAW Writing by accident and decided to scratch that itch. I signed up for one of Carla’s courses with no idea of what to expect. Well, let me tell you—Carla works some kind of weird witchy voodoo stuff in her lessons. You start thinking, maybe I can actually do this, and begin to really enjoy it. Then, before you know it, you’re not just writing—you’re compelled, even obsessed. So, I’m warning you: if you decide to take one of these courses, do it at your own risk! Claire Boulter2024-11-10 I’d thoroughly recommend the Psychology of Writing course – it was well-structured, relaxed and engaging. It helped me to identify and understand some of the barriers I’ve put in the way of writing, and I came away from each session feeling positive and eager to put what we’d discussed into practice. Thanks to Carla and the lovely group I was part of, I now have a toolkit of techniques that are helping me to worry less and write more. Sian McGill2024-11-01 I'm benefitting hugely from Carla's Novel Writing Course, particularly following my recent move to Exeter and periods of ill-health. The course has motivated me to finally get down to plotting and writing the novel I'd only been contemplating for the last year! As a newbie in town, I'm also starting to join Meetup events, as part of Raw Writing. Well done, Carla - I look forward to doing more courses with you! dorothy evans2024-10-27 A short course that packed a lot in it! I took a lot from it that is already helping me to move forward with a positive mindset. I’ll be going over my notes, the course notes and the exercises for a while to come. Thank you, Carla!Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 54 reviews

Raw Writing Masterclass with Trevor Byrne – Dialogue
- 1.5 hour masterclass, starting on:
- October 27, 2024 7:00 pm
Talk is tricky. Stephen King says dialogue is the one thing a writer is either good at naturally or they aren’t. Author and editor Trevor Byrne doesn’t entirely agree and his workshop will demonstrate the ways every writer can improve their ability to write great dialogue.
In this masterclass, we’ll look at examples of excellent dialogue from film, TV, stories, and novels, with a view to understanding why some talk just seems to work; why it sounds right. We’ll also look at bad talk in good books – partly to make ourselves feel better, but mostly so we can avoid the mistakes even acclaimed writers sometimes make.
We’ll explore the function of dialogue in fiction, and how we can make sure we’re using it to best effect. Dialogue develops plot by releasing new information, and helps build the storyworld. Dialogue is characterisation; dialogue reveals the speaker even if they don’t mean it to. Dialogue makes the reader laugh or gasp or cringe. Yet dialogue, crucially, is also action – talk, in fiction, is tension. Talk is conflict.
No matter the function, the clever work that your dialogue does shouldn’t draw attention to itself. Everything a character says should ‘sound’ like real talk, for its time and place: we’ll look at accent and idiom (should you use it?), at the rhythms and cadences of real talk.
Sometimes great dialogue in fiction is the sly, loaded, impossibly tense verbal sparring between Cromwell and More in Hilary Mantel’s The Mirror and the Light, and sometimes it’s Vincent and Jules in Pulp Fiction chatting with delighted, faintly disdainful disbelief about what Parisians call various McDonald’s menu items.
By the end of this workshop, you’ll have the tools and tricks you need to create vibrant, authentic, muscular, effective dialogue.

- 3 Places Left
- Four-week course, starting on:
- January 4, 2025 10:30 am
Great characters are one of the most important ingredients for a successful story. But how does a writer go about crafting characters that are both complex and compelling — characters we might love and hate in equal measure, but always want to keep following to the end of their journey? This course will cover the basics of inventing and fleshing out new characters, creating and communicating backstory, writing dialogue and, crucially, situating characters within convincing relationship structures with family, friends, lovers, and others.

A Crash Course in Authoring
- 90-minute workshop, starting on:
- March 1, 2025 4:00 pm
Are you a writer who aspires to become a published author? Getting your book out there is one thing, but turning your writing into a career is another entirely. Join two of 2024’s biggest debut novelists, Sunday Times Bestsellers, Jennie Godfrey and Samuel Burr, as they talk you through everything they’ve learned about becoming published authors. From pitching your book to anyone, mastering social media authentically and building a professional network, Jennie and Sam are ready to reveal all.
There will even be an opportunity to get feedback on your own 60-second elevator pitch at the end of the session, but don’t worry Jennie and Sam will kick off with their own first, discussing how they went about distilling their stories, honing their pitches and ultimately securing their dream deals.
Jennie Godfrey was raised in West Yorkshire and her debut novel, The List of Suspicious Things, is inspired by her childhood there in the 1970s. Jennie is from a mill-working family, but as the first of the generation born after the mills closed, she went to university and built a career in the corporate world. In 2020 she left and began to write. She is now a writer and part-time Waterstones bookseller and lives in the Somerset countryside.
Samuel Burr is a TV producer who has worked on popular factual shows including the BAFTA-nominated Secret Life of 4-Year-Olds. Samuel’s writing was selected for Penguin’s WriteNow scheme and in 2021 he graduated from the Faber Academy. A documentary he shot inside a retirement village when he was eighteen years old launched his career in television and inspired his internationally bestselling debut novel, The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers, which has been translated into 18 foreign languages.
